Bua Thai Closed down : Traville Gateway unlucky for restaurants ?

The Traville Gateway shopping mall in Rockville Maryland is not lucky for some restaurants. While CAVA the Greek restaurant is getting rave reviews and seems always crowded there are others that are moving on. Amada Amante moved and The Wyne is in its place. Bua Thai ( Earlier called Thai taste) has closed down and Beale Street Grill is openijg in its place. Pearl Garden chinese closed and the Sushi Oishii that is ints place is awesome.

Equinox : First white table cloth restaurant the Obamas visited in DC

I just wanted to mention that one of the first restaurants that Barack and Michele Obama visited in DC is Equinox. Thu Jan 15th, Washington post Reliable source says they ate: President-elect chose salad greens with chablis poached apples and picked watermelon radish as a first course. Mrs. Obama opted for the pan fried Rappahannock oysters. Both selected a grilled all-natural striploin steak for the main course. For dessert, Michelle Obama ordered the crispy bananas. Gray also provided a tasting menu during the meal and Zabaglione Gelato for dessert

Minerva keeps on Improving

2443 Centreville Road
# G1
Herndon, VA 20171

"I went to Minerva for lunch today. Something definitely has changed ( for the better). They now have the concept of a professional manager greeting you and managing the list. In terms of the food, I love the fact that they had "tangri Kabab" this is a chicken dish similar to Tandoori chicken but a different marinade of cheese , cream and pepper. The gulab jamun was fabulous. light and not too sweet. This maybe because it did not have a chance to soak fully in the syrup but that was actually an advantage.
Good show Minerva. I am glad even though you are doing well you are working to keep improving your service. highly recommend this restaurant for a lunch buffet if you want to eat Indian.

#inaug09 Presidential Inauguration and nostalgia

I live about n20 miles from the National Mall in Washington DC and have the opportunity to be part of the celebration but I am consciously choosing to stay home and watch the celebration on TV. Despite that the spirit I see here in Washington DC and from people on TV and social networks the occasion has the spirit that India would have felt in 1947. Granted this is not a freedom issue here but it feels like that. Here is a clip of a American newsreel on India's independence in 1947.

I have been thinking about a few contrasts, in India when there is a huge gathering of crowds or celebrations the authorities close the liquor stores and bars. Here in Dc the bars and liquor establishments will remain open for extended hours. No criticism of either approach but this is is a contrast :). The media has been of late giving a lot of worst case scenarios. Not enough Port-a -potties (7k of them) , cell phones may not work, you may walk 2 miles etc. My experience in the National Mall in Dc is that you always walk 2 miles every time you visit the National mall. I expect everything to be good and I am just not venturing out because of the weather and to let the guests who are visiting DC enjoy themselves.

About the 2 to 4 Million people who will be in DC in the nest 2 days, well thats not a lot considering the following :

Extras who participated in the movie Gandhi Funeral scene : 300k

Abdul Nasser Egyptian President's funeral on  was one of the largest in history, attended by an estimated seven million people

Cheers ! I am happy that I am being part of history.  Looking for a social media event go to http://blog.flickr.net/en/2009/01/07/inauguration-day-meetup-in-dc/

Indian food from Indique on Presidential Inaugural Parade route in Washington DC

Indique / Indique Heights restaurants will be serving their delicious food  along the Presidential Inaugural parade route. Folks say hello to them at their 2 locations  on the Presidential Inauguration Parade route  - Intersection of 15th street/ New York Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue and at 14th/G street (west side) …  Heat yourself with the Masala Chai Tea, original street food Bhelpuri  becomes DC fare.

The secret service has a map and details of the inaugural activities and road closings http://cli.gs/mt4Zb9 Read  more on Indique Chef's blog. We covered Indique when we had a tweetup there a few weeks ago on the Network Solutions' Blog.

Todd Gray - Equinox - gets the first family first business

Restaurants in the DC area are looking for some new guests - The Obamas. In the last 8 years George Bush ate at home and look what happened to the economy :) ( its a joke so don't bother slamming me in the comments :) ) Anyway the good news from Chicago is that Obama likes restaurants . Tom Sietsema took the initiative to suggest http://cli.gs/eV2mbH where Barack and Michele Obama should dine out in DC. I remember the day Madeleine Albright came to Bombay Bistro. Todd Gray of Equinox is a Culinary institute Grad and has run a successful restaurant with wife Ellen. I met him once at a Washingtonian party for best restaurants in a previous life.

Here is what the Washington Post Column Reliable Source had to say about the meal:

President-elect chose salad greens with chablis poached apples and picked watermelon radish as a first course. Mrs. Obama opted for the pan fried Rappahannock oysters. Both selected a grilled all-natural striploin steak for the main course. For dessert, Michelle Obama ordered the crispy bananas. Gray also provided a tasting menu during the meal and Zabaglione Gelato for dessert.
Gray said he was honored that Equinox was D.C.'s first "table-cloth restaurant" to host the president-elect and his wife for dinner, and even more thrilled it was for such a special occasion.

I am so glad that  for Michele Obama's birthday the first family and maybe 12 others walked across the park to go to Equinox. Thinking like me the Washington City Paper thinks this is part of the Economic Stimulus package by encouraging local business. At the Washington DC food blog Metrocurean Amanda thinks that Obama spotting may get old.  As for me I am looking for Obama to answer one of my tweets for a meetup at a DC/MD/VA restaurant :)

No Reservations, Chef Anthony Bourdain heads out to DC

In the next episode of No Reservations, Chef Anthony Bourdain heads out to explore the city of contrasts – democrat vs. republican, affluent vs. poor, visible vs. invisible. His visit to Washington D.C. doesn't stop at the U-Street Corridor, the International Spy Museum, nor the D.C. Central Kitchen – he also makes his way to hotspots in the outlying areas of Arlington and Falls Church.
The DC episode is unique for a number of reasons; he finds pleasure dining at the home of the world's greatest chili dogs (Tony agrees), where President-elect Obama just visited, digs deep into the spectrum that is D.C., home to dozens of different cultures and languages, and  meets a number of interesting famous and non-famous people along the way. In my opinion, it's always great to see Tony in America, exploring cities that we all know and allowing us to see them in a different light. The best part for me – he eats my all-time favorite dish, Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs.
The all-new episode airs Monday, January 19th at 10pm on the Travel Channel.

US Airways Crew saves 155 lives by landing in the Hudson River

Flight #flight1549 from La Guardia to Charlotte NC today landed in the Hudson River and all the passengers and crew were safely rescued. See Twitpic http://twitpic.com/135xa

Twitter eyewitness account http://twitter.com/jkrums

As I was flying from Las Vegas on Tuesday night I sat in the emergency exit and wondered about how I would operate the exit if needed. I am glad the flight 1549 episode had a happy text book ending. From the coverage on TV I see that the passengers behaved marvellously and helped each other. The crew stayed back inside the plane till all the passengers were out of the plane.

Capt Sullenberger http://www.kxii.com/home/headlines/37678624.html was a US Air force pilot who now flies for US airways and did a great job keeping the pane flat till it hit the water and keeping it afloat as long as possible. 3 cheers to the crew fir saving these lives.

The stock of US airways was up 7% before the news of the crash hit. Here are some things I am going to do:

a) Learn swimming

b) Pay attention when the crew demonstrate the life jackets

c) Always read the flight safety instructions

d) Smile and greet any pilot I meet and shake hands if protocol allows.

Advice to Pilot Sullenberger - dude you need to join SouthWest. You are a hero !

A culture of keeping customers happy - Southwest Airlines

I made a quick trip to Las Vegas for the Affiliate Summit West and was happy to fly Southwest. My return trip would have been a disaster if not for Eve and Lynette at Southwest Gate C4 - 13th January evening. I have been flying so much that I am taking things for granted. I checked in and finished security and arrived at the gate to see my friend Adam Veiner there. He was flying to Washington Dulles, it is obvious that one flight could not go to 2 airports in the Washington Dc area. I checked my boarding card and to my horror it was clear that my travel agent had booked of to a different airport than the one where my car was parked. Even if it was not Eve's gate problem she patiently heard my story and after consulting with Lynette her Supervisor got me on a flight to Baltimore leaving almost at the same time. If the core idealogy of Southwest was only to make money they could have enforced the full fare requirement to change the ticket. Southwest has gained a lot of respect and furthered my loyalty. thank you Southwest.
The flight to Las Vegas actually went through St. Louis and I watched first hand the quick turnaround. The crew changed and the new crew quickly arranged everything and we took off I think after 30 minutes. I specially want to recognize Patsy who made everyone comfortable and was efficient. When asked why Southwest had the current free seating system, the crew said that it enabled them to quickly turn around the flights and they have tested this. I can understand that except I would someone to clarify if the boarding numbers are given on a first come first served basis ? Should we quickly hit the Southwest Website as soon as it gets to 24 hours before the flight?

Rockville Town Center getting Icy and Spicy

The Rockville Town Center is morphing into a real cool place to be. I love the fact that the library is in the center of it . Kudos to the planners. There have been a few times we have planned a library visit with a lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants surrounding the Town Square.

Today I was thrilled to see a Ice Skating Rink and then in the evening I heard that the Chef of Bethesda's Passage to India is opening a new Indian Restaurant SpiceXing in the Town Square. I just cannot wait , maybe next month's tweetup will be in SpicXing in the Rockville Town Square.

Peach Salsa ! Yum ! From bluesmokesalsa.com

What do you do when a product you receive to review , turns out so good that your entire family including a toddler have already reviewed it by the time you got home. :) This salsa is made by bluesmokesalsa.com. I am usually a chutney guy ( guess where I am from originally) and don't really enjoy the regular salsa from grocery stores so we make our own when we have friends. The reason I expresses interest in this product was because "peach " salsa was new to me and this company is a small business from my neighboring state of West Virginia. Robin Hildebrand is my facebook friend and I think she makes a great Peach Salsa.

Confessions of a grocery store lover

This picture is also the most viewed picture on Flickr yesterday.

You should listen to this Utter about me and grocery stores which more than 100 people listened to. Thanks all for letting me confess :)
