Five Great Cookbooks for Spices from Serious Eats

I was thrilled to learn that the book Modern Spice by Monica Bhide is among the top cookbooks with spices recommended by Seriouseats.com

20100127-spicycookbooks-modernspice.jpg Traditional flavors with a fresh twist that shine, Modern Spice brings Western insight into the exotic (yet made simple) dishes of her native Indian cuisine. Born in India, Bhide takes her first-hand knowledge of traditional dishes and updates it for today's cook. "The secret to great Indian food is to understand the spices," she says, and dedicates an entire chapter to explaining the essentials of a modern-day Indian pantry. Our favorites: the Indian-style chili, the wings coated in a mint and ginger rub and Hot, Hotter, Hottest Shrimp.

New release of Bollywood movie Veer

image

I am just thrilled that now Bollywood movies are released at my local theatre almost simultaneously as they are in India. You should go at least to get an experience of the Indian movie industry that churns out 000’s of movies every year.

Did you know just by entering the name of a movie Google’s movie search will give you the nearest theatre and the times in your search results. You could also just type movies. We are going to watch the movie “ 3 idiots” soon.

Lunch special at Tara Thai Rio In Gaithersburg

This is ginger chicken lunch special.which tasted very well. I was disappointed that the service person brought the soup, spring roll and the entree together for me when the other two people with me had not got their food ( only the lunch special comes with soup and spring roll) The restaurant had only one other table so there was really no excuse.

Monday Jan 25th episode of No Reservations : Where is Chef Bourdain going ?

Ok Folks have you read the “Kitchen Confidential” ? Tune-in Monday, January 18th, at 10 E/P to see Anthony Bourdain go to Brittany, France on No Reservations.

I always take pics of food porn but “pork porn” ?

Here is the scoop on what you will find in this episode:

Tony's trip begins with a stroll (or you might say sprint) through a farmer's market with chef Olivier Roellinger. In Tony's words, "To describe him as a chef is insufficient". His past includes a tragic story of being beaten, left for dead, and in a coma for weeks, beforethen having to teach himself how to walk again. Now, over 30 years later, he has made a name for himself as a chef (including being awarded 3 Michelin stars in 2006). Olivier is currently running his most recent venture, Chateau "Richeux". This restaurant and hotel has a Celtic kitchen, exotic herb garden, apple orchards, potato farms, a tee pee, and pigs? That's right...pigs. Beautiful, clean, nice-smelling pigs (or so Tony says). I won't ruin the segment by trying to describe the "best pork porn ever", because let's face it...nobody can do that as well as Tony. I did find the conversation about "a happy animal being a better tasting animal" interesting. Do you agree?
Oh...still no Tower of Shellfish.
Next up, Tony visits Olivier's dessert shop (Grain de Vanille) in the quiet village of Cancale. I was watching this segment on an empty stomach, and I highly advise against that. Galettes Cancalese (sand cookies) and caramels au beurre sale (salted butter caramels) were a few of the items featured and they look a-m-a-z-i-n-g. This will be the first place I go if I ever make it to Brittany. Sadly, no Tower of Shellfish here either.
While No Reservations is typically all about the food, I personally enjoy the off-topic segments like the shopping trip in this episode. Tony's cameraman insists that the whole crew make a stop to buy the stereotypical blue and white-striped shirt. Can't picture Tony shopping for one? "What could explain this sudden urge by masses of otherwise reasonable people the compelling need to buy a blue and white-striped nautical shirt?". You'll have to watch the episode to see if Tony's crew can convince him to wear one of these.
Ok, back to the food. Chances are if you're an oyster eater, you've heard of Belon oysters. It's also probable that unless you've been to Brittany, France you haven't had a real Belon oyster. Tony heads to the source (the Belon River) to visit Anne Belon, a fifth-generation oyster farmer. Her family was the first to farm oysters in the area. Belon oysters are among the most famous in the world due to the rich nutrients that come from the river itself. Even the dogs eat oysters here. Still no Tower of Shellfish...
Tony hits up Ty Billig Creperie for crepes that are supposedly better than those in Paris. (This was said by a Frenchman, so it must be true!). The dessert crepe at this place looks delicious.

Canada comes top of world's largest expat lifestyle survey

Australia and Thailand rank 2nd and 3rd respectively UK scores poorly for quality of life Established markets outperform emerging markets Expats generally enjoy a better quality of life. Expat Experience 2009 is conducted by HBSC

Being an expat means a better quality of life

Overall, the survey revealed that expats enjoy a better life in their new country. Germany, France, and Thailand topped the survey in this respect, with expats living in these countries reporting the greatest increases.

Better accommodation

For most expats, the biggest increases in quality were seen in the categories of accommodation and travel with 42% of expats saying that the quality of their accommodation had improved, and 44% reporting that they had a better commute into work. Canada, Thailand and the US were the top countries for better quality of accommodation, with 68%, 63% and 61% respectively claiming that their homes are better now. However, the picture was very different for expats living in the UK, with more than half (58%) stating that accommodation standards were poorer than in their home country.

Trying new things

The opportunities to try new food and cultural dining experiences are often reasons cited as motivators to travel, but what about when you're an expat? Do you pine for the familiar flavours? More than one-third of expats living in UAE (37%) thought food quality had increased significantly compared to their country of origin. Singapore is clearly a top spot for gourmands with 43% of expats living in the region agreeing that the food quality had improved significantly since moving there, however France topped this category with 71% of expats claiming a better quality of food.

But work long hours and your family suffer

Although no link was found between better working hours and an increased social life, there is a clear correlation between poor working hours and a decreased quality of family life. Over half of all expats moving to India (60%) and Hong Kong (52%) noted that a worsening of their working hours had created deterioration in the quality of their family life.

A missed chance for recycling in Montgomery hotels

Great point by Washington Post reader Susan Gerecht of Kensington

Why don't hotels jump on the recycling bandwagon? Why aren't hotels, at least in Montgomery County, required to provide recycling bins in the guest rooms, since the county requires bins for all other businesses and organizations?

Anthony Bourdain No Reservations goes to Turkey Monday, January 18th, at 10 E/P

I always wanted to go to Turkey . My friends KD Paine of and Lorelle Van Fossen told me about their trips and it seems like a nice place to visit. Today I got an email that Anthony Bourdain is starting the next season of “No Reservations” with turkey.

The episode airing on Monday is described by Travel Channel in this way:

Tony begins his trip in Istanbul hungover after indulging in beverages on the plane. What better way to remedy that than with breakfast? He heads to Kale Cafe for a traditional Turkish breakfast, which is quite different than the normal American morning meal. Eggs, Turkish lamb sausage, cheeses, breads, olives, tomatoes and cucumbers are part of the meal. Interesting fact: the Turkish word for breakfast (kahvaltı) means "before coffee", so a black tea is served with the meal and coffee is drank afterward.
Next, Tony tries the original fast food, Lahmajun, which he affectionately refers to as a "low rent favorite". It's basically a very-thin crusted pizza made with meats, spices, and vegetables. What does it taste like? Tony says, "I've been dialing back on the adjectives on this show. There's only so many when describing food." Does watching Tony try to describe the taste of foods enhance your viewing experience? I'll let you be the judge.
A trip to Turkey just wouldn't be the same without meat on a stick, or as Tony says, "A throbbing missile of love". Despite being really classic stoner food, this stuff is delicious and freshly made. Tony also tries some soggy burgers off the street. I'll leave that one for your imagination.

Hope you will watch. Who know one day there will be a “Eat with Shashi show”?

Iron Chef – White House Edition Update from @TopShelfWBJ

I hate to say this but I ended up watching the wrong channel – i,e Travel Channel instead of Food Network . That has a lot to do with the fact that I have two subscriptions – Comcast and Direct TV and being a cheapskate I do not get too many channels. Well you can only watch so much having dinner in front of the TV. ( I know its a very bad habit)

Good news is that Missy Frederick has a nice recap at the Washington Business Journal

The secret ingredient on Sunday night's two hour special episode of Iron Chef? Produce from the White House garden.

Both teams made sure to incorporate sweet potatoes in their dishes, as Obama indicated to the chefs that the tubers were her favorite items from the garden.

Hankering for a taste of Bollywood. See 3-Idiots on the big screen in the DC area

3 Idiots

‎The movie is a comedy‎ and even though I have not seen it yet, the movie is highly recommended by many of my friends both here in the US and in India. The theme is very commonplace and makes comedy of the Indian parental mindset where every Indian parent wants thier kids to be either a Doctor or a engineer. The movie is 2 hours and 15 minutes long. Review web site Dear Cinema says that the movie 3 Idiots will be released officially on You Tube

According to the Indian Newspaper BusinessLine the movie has a deal to be released on YouTube after 3 months which I think is a huge deal and marketing genius.

“The movie will be released on YouTube after eight to ten weeks,” Mr Vidhu Vinod Chopra, producer of the movie told Business Line at the sidelines of the 3 Idiots press conference on Tuesday. The deal with YouTube will allow viewers to download the entire movie from the Web at a fixed price. “We haven't decided on the pricing points yet, but we hope this will stop illegal download and video sharing,” Mr Chopra According to a recent report released by Motion Picture Association of America, India ranks eight among countries with the highest incidence of online piracy.

I hope YouTube has a great time marketing this too and here is a review of the movie :

Mon – Thu 10.30 am to 10.00 pm
Fri – Sat 10.30 am to 11.00 pm
sun: 11.30am to 10.00 pm

I walked in to this newly opened place on a cold wintery day to get some nice hot Chinese soup. Hot and sour for us and Chicken Noodle soup for the toddler. Very friendly staff. The Oriental Cafe is built for carry out as they have a reasonably large kitchen and have a good party menu and few seats for actually sitting and eating. Their price is definitely a bargain for people looking for a place to grab a bite in the Rockville side of Shady Grove road.

I liked the fact that they have a “Create your own personal” Tofu dish for $7.95 with a choice of two vegetables and your choice of the sauce. This is a luxury for vegetarians who very often are relegated to ordering dishes without the meat.

Another reason to give this a try is that we need to encourage more local entrepreneurs and make them successful. This place is close to the Universities at Shady Grove.

If you have been there please comment and let me know what you think of the place.

Vegetarian food at Agua Calientes the nearest town to Macchu Picchu

The food will be home cooked and hot and vegetarian. Dont expect it to resemble food from India much. I Was really glad that there was a choice for vegetarians.

The people at this restaurant were awesome and welcoming. Other travellers say that there is authentic Indian chai here- http://bit.ly/8PxVoq but I did not try it

Watch Michelle Obama on the Jan 3rd Iron Chef on Food Network

On Jan 3rd there is a special guest on Food Network’s Iron Chef show . Iron Chef calls her a Guest of National Importance which she is and has a video leading up to the episode “The First Lady challenges the chefs to make garden-fresh fare”

The Episode summary from the Food Network Site:

Super Chef Emeril Lagasse and Iron Chef Mario Batali take on Iron Chef Bobby Flay and Super White House Chef Comerford in the culinary showdown of the century! There will be a special guest appearance by the First Lady, tasked by the Chairman to give the chefs their special challenge: each team will have to create the ultimate meal for America, using the White House Garden as the 'secret ingredient.'

Alyssa Lee comments on AOL TV : Regardless of any political leanings, however, fans of cook-off shows will no doubt salivate from the sheer culinary power unleashed in this epic Kitchen Stadium event. And to show off scrumptious dishes using locally produced, organic ingredients? That's just icing on the cake.

Emily Yahr In the Washington Post says: The first lady, whose domestic agenda includes promoting healthy eating, shows up in a theme-appropriate orange dress reminiscent of a crisp vegetable. She informs the chefs that the secret (and required) ingredient for the food competition -- in which three judges decide whose dishes are most delicious -- is anything in the White House garden.

Hope you will be watching. Of course we had some fun at the Social Media Club DC with a Chef’s contest recently.http://www.examiner.com/x-33257-DC-Social-Media-Marketing-Examiner~y2009m12d17-Geeks-Cook-and-Foodies-Judge-at-The-Social-Media-ClubDC-Holiday-Iron-Chef-Competition—Party
