This restaurant had excellent reviews and for the past decade we wanted to visit. The chance came today and we went there for lunch. Very authentic food. You order at the counter and pay and the food is brought to the table. it is family run and has a lot of chinese clientele which speaks for it authenticity. I am sure we stayed safe by ordering known dishes . At the other tables we say mooshu noodles looked so good and they had a mushroom and bread appetizer.

we ate Chicken Lo Mein

The price is very reasonable and they have kept the prices down even during these times where rice is so expensive. They have some coupons on their web site http://www.joesnoodlehouse.com/coupon.html and the menu http://www.joesnoodlehouse.com/menu.html

Bhutan Food on the Mall - Indique Heights

We visited the Smithsonian Folk life Festival on the National Mall DC yesterday. Growing up in India I had always wanted to visit Bhutan. It was a admirable place and we heard of the King who kept in touch with the people and the simplicity with which the people lived their lives.

When we heard that the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival was featuring Bhutan we decided not to miss it. At the food stall we met the Chef and Co-owner of Indique Heights Vinod Kottapurath and here is his interview.

The food was very good. The Washington Post had alerted us of the dish Ema Datsi - national Dish of Bhutan with Chilly and Cheese served with  Bhutanese rice (see picture below)

Now if you are not brave enough to try the Ema Datsi ( I come from a hot chilly eating state in India - Andhra Pradesh - and this dish was very hot for me. It was fine if you didn't eat the chilly or you could choose the Jasha Tshoem with chicken.

The menu on the Mall was made by Indique Heights with training and certification from the Bhutan Government. As Chef Vinod says in the video the Prince of Bhutan was a guest at Indique Heights. Chef Vinod also posted the visit of the Prince Jigyel Ugyen to the National Mall http://chefvinod.typepad.com/chef_vinod/2008/06/prince-jigyel-ugyen-wangchuck.html

I read his book " The death of Vishnu" and as I lived in India for a good part of my life the book si very authenitc and engaging. I have yet to read his second book "The Age of Shiva". I may not be able to make it to this event but posting this so others can go.

Experience Bhutan for the price of a Metro ticket

My daughter was very excited when she saw this article in the Washington Post about the Bhutan:Land of the Thunder Dragon part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival June 25-June 29 and July 2-6, 2008.

I was excited too because the Bhutanese food sold at the festival's concession stands, meanwhile, will be provided by Indique Heights, an Indian restaurant in Chevy Chase. Do you guys remember we had a meetup there a few months ago. see Scott Stead's coverage here http://www.scottstead.com/2007/12/27/dc-tweet-up-december-2007/

I am planning to go there next weekend. Anyone else?

Pacifico Beer

I like lagers and this was a good beer for lunch. According to The locals ask for it as a "Pacificoballena"which means "Pacific Whale". "Clara" means clear."
In a way this beer is going to go international as its owned by Groupo Modelo and Anheuser-Busch and if InBev succeeds in buying Anheuser-Busch then this beer would have gone a full circle back to its European roots when 'hree Germans opened the Cerveceria del Pacifico brewery in Mazatlan." Pacifico has a contest now that you can enter at http://mexicoviapacifico.com/

Austin Grill in Rockville Town Center

If you are short of time and have to go out to lunch , this message will surely appeal to you. When we went there shortly after1 p.m on a Saturday it was not very crowded. I think this was because the day was very good and the regulars were all outside.

Location wise if you are going to see any of the free shows or saturday night free movies at the Rockville Town Square this is a prime location. The food is mainly Tex-Mex. Service is excellent. I think the prices are slightly high.
